Mae: A Modern Reinterpretation of Korean Tradition

The Movement of Line series showcases the intricate Sanggam inlay technique, where countless fine lines are carved into porcelain and infused with color, creating a visually striking interplay of depth and contrast. The bold black lines seem to absorb fleeting emotions while seamlessly blending with the form.

As one of the earliest pieces in Minsook Park’s Movement of Line series, Mae embodies fresh, dynamic energy—contrasting with the more refined strokes of her later works. Its name is derived from Maebyeong, a traditional Korean ceramic shape from the Goryeo Dynasty, known for its narrow mouth, full shoulders, and elongated body. Originally used as a vase for plum blossoms, this form carries deep artistic and historical significance.

Mae reimagines the classic Maebyeong with a taller, more elongated silhouette, enhancing its sleek and modern aesthetic. When viewed from above, its flowing lines resemble the mesmerizing orbits of stars drawn into a black hole. The circular opening appears perfectly round from the top, yet from the side, it reveals a subtle diagonal tilt—like a quiet, knowing smile.

Blending tradition with contemporary artistry, Mae is a statement piece that brings elegance and depth to any space.
