Artist Jungwoo Kim: Exploring the Essence of Korean Ceramic Art
Introduction
Jungwoo Kim is a contemporary Korean ceramic artist whose work bridges the past and present. With a deep understanding of traditional Korean pottery, he reinterprets historical techniques through a modern lens. His expertise in iron-painted Buncheong ceramics from the Gyeryongsan region showcases a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
Gyeryongsan is a historically significant sacred mountain, valued since the Baekje, Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon periods. The mountain is home to renowned temples and cultural sites such as the Nam-mae-tap (Twin Pagodas), further enhancing its historical importance.

The contrasting black iron pigment and white slip create dynamic brushstrokes that capture both movement and emotion. By analyzing historical patterns and incorporating personal experiences of Gyeryongsan’s landscape, Kim develops new motifs that honor the legacy of Korean ceramics while pushing its boundaries.
Artistic Process and Inspiration
Jungwoo Kim's artistic practice is rooted in a deep connection with his birthplace, Gyeryongsan. Using locally sourced materials from Banpo-myeon, he meticulously studies and recreates the traditional iron-painted techniques of the 16th century. His research into the natural clay and slip application processes allows him to express the organic essence of Buncheong ceramics.

Artist Statement
“For someone born in Gyeryongsan, the land itself is my greatest teacher. The ancient kilns and the natural environment have shaped my artistic identity. The soil and stones around the kilns taught me craftsmanship, while nature nurtured my creativity.
I remember digging into the rough, dark earth as a child, feeling its texture and energy. The raw clay, even when subjected to fire, retains its inherent purity. This is what I strive for in my work—preserving the essence of materials while refining their expression.
The soft, creamy white slip I apply over my ceramics carries warmth, much like the delicate touch of nature itself. I gather inspiration from the living elements of Gyeryongsan—its plants, fish, and birds—reinterpreting their forms through my own memories. My brush follows the traces of history, seeking to embody the power of iron-painted Buncheong’s past and translate it into a contemporary language.
My work is a collection of history, just like the shards of Buncheong pottery scattered across Gyeryongsan. It is an ongoing dialogue between the past and the present, between craftsmanship and creativity. Much like the porcelain chamber of Augustus II in Dresden’s Zwinger Palace, I aim to create a body of work that elevates Buncheong aesthetics to new artistic heights while staying rooted in its heritage.”
